Literary Scholars
Class Units
Throughout this year we will be alternating between whole class novels and book clubs, while also incorporating mythology, informational text, and drama. We will continue to work on and expand reading comprehension skills you have already been taught, while also trying to understand the deeper meaning and themes within the text. Class and small group discussions will further your comprehension as well as writing and responding to the different written works. At the end of each unit, you will complete a variety of performance assessments to demonstrate their understanding of the unit. Information for each unit will be updated on each reading unit's page as we progress throughout the year. |
AR Reading
You will also be responsible for independent reading as well, with books of your choosing. Independent reading is monitored through the AR Reading program. You will be given a list of AR test due dates for the year, but the tests are due roughly every THREE weeks. The highest score from the tests taken for each due date will be added to your reading grades. The more books you are able to complete, the more tests you will be able to take, which will provide more opportunity to ensure a high grade if you choose to complete more than one test within a three-week period. You are required to read a book in your level and at least 3.0 points, class novels will not count for this project. |
Authors, Poets, Lyricists, Lend Me Your Ears!
This year we will accomplish a variety of methods of writing. Writing is also integrated in every subject. In the morning we will have a dedicated block of time for grammar and explicit writing techniques. Writing will be a part of our daily explorations in the afternoon, and there is a large block on Friday mornings dedicated to more extensive writing. You will use both paper and pencil, and computers to publish your writing. At the beginning of the year as a class we will set up your own school blog. These pages are password protected and are unable to be found by search engines. You will be writing "journal entries" on your blog, you will also be able to post photos of work or projects you are proud of.
This is the rubric that will be used to assess all Writer's Blocks.
